The Malaysian Timber Certification Council (MTCC) wishes to inform stakeholders of recent updates from PEFC International concerning the PEFC Trademarks Rules, together with two upcoming webinars addressing the EU Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition Directive (EmpCo) and the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR).
1. PEFC Trademarks Rules – Latest Update
New requirements under the EU Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition Directive (EmpCo) strengthen the rules governing environmental claims and sustainability labels. Environmental claims are required to be specific and substantiated, while sustainability labels must meet defined requirements.
In response, PEFC has updated its Trademarks Rules and is introducing additional guidance and resources to support PEFC-related communications that are clear, specific and closely aligned with what can be substantiated.
Why This Matters to Malaysian Certificate Holders?
For Malaysian organisations using PEFC trademarks in communications relating to the EU market, the changes may require closer attention to how environmental claims, labels and sustainability messages are presented. Relevant claims and marketing materials should remain clear, verifiable and consistent with the updated PEFC Trademarks Rules.
2. Webinar: PEFC Alignment with EmpCo: What Companies Need to Know
New requirements under the EU Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition Directive (EmpCo) strengthen the rules governing environmental claims and sustainability labels. Environmental claims are required to be specific and substantiated, while sustainability labels must meet defined requirements.
- changes to the PEFC Trademarks Rules;
- practical considerations for the use of PEFC trademarks and claims;
- guidance and supporting resources available to PEFC trademark users.
DATE: 20 October 2026 (Tuesday)

3. Webinar: EUDR in Practice: How PEFC Supports Compliance from Forest to Market
The session will address:
- the latest EUDR developments;
- the PEFC EUDR Due Diligence System (DDS);
- practical steps for organisations across the supply chain;
- the exchange of data and information across supply chains.
DATE: 20 October 2026 (Tuesday)
TWO SESSIONS ARE AVAILABLE:
TIME: 5:00 PM or 10:00 PM (Malaysia Time)
Why This Matters to Malaysian Certificate Holders?
Companies established outside the EU are not directly subject to EUDR obligations. However, Malaysian suppliers serving the EU market may be required to provide information to support the due diligence obligations of their EU customers, including information relating to product origin, traceability and production areas. PEFC-certified organisations outside the EU may also voluntarily implement the PEFC EUDR DDS for relevant products supplied to the EU market.
