KUALA LUMPUR, 25 September 2019 – In conjunction with its 20th Anniversary themed “Pushing Boundaries Advancing Sustainability”, the Malaysian Timber Certification Council (MTCC) presented the MTCC SustainabilityAwards to recognise and celebrate the hard work and commitment undertaken by forest managers and timber enterprises in meeting the stringent demand of forest management and chain of custody certification under the Malaysian TimberCertification Scheme (MTCS – a national timber certification scheme for sustainability of forests developed and operated by the MTCC).
The MTCC Sustainability Awards recognised certified organisations with exemplary leadership and had carried out inspirational initiatives in sustainability through the creation and implementation of procedures, plans, projects or initiatives that took into consideration the various aspects of sustainability.
The award categories were:
- Social Sustainability and Empowerment
- Product Innovation and Diversification
- Biodiversity and Ecosystem Protection
- Leadership in Sustainability
The judging was done by a five-member panel comprising representatives from environmental, social and economic interest groups and research institution. The winners were:
1. Social Sustainability and Empowerment – Ulu Sg Milian & Sapulut FMU managed by Bornion Timber Sdn. Bhd.
2. Product Innovation and Diversification – One-Tech (M) Sdn. Bhd.
3. Biodiversity and Ecosystem Protection – Anap Muput FMU managed by Zedtee Sdn. Bhd.
4. Leadership in Sustainability – Segaliud Lokan FMU managed by KTS Plantation Sdn. Bhd.
Each winner was presented with a certificate and a special trophy by the Minister of Primary Industries YB Puan Teresa Kok at the MTCC 20th Anniversary Dinner held at Sunway Putra Hotel here yesterday. About 300 guests mainly timber and forest industry players attended the event which also included the launch of MTCC’s commemorative book titled “Twenty Years – Pushing Boundaries Advancing Sustainability.”
WINNER’S TROPHY – AN MTCC-ROYAL SELANGOR COLLABORATION
The chic-looking trophy for the MTCC Sustainability Awards was a collaborative effort between MTCC and Royal Selangor International Sdn. Bhd. Royal Selangor, an iconic Malaysian brand of the finest pewter products, was the first non-wood based product manufacturing company to obtain the MTCS Chain of Custody Certificate in 2017. Its wood-based pewter wares carry the MTCS/PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) label, signifying that the wood components are 100% sourced from certified forests in Malaysia.
The trophy for the grand award category, Leadership in Sustainability, was sponsored by Royal Selangor.
