Kota Kinabalu-based FMU 2 Gerak Saga Sdn. Bhd. has recently been awarded the Certificate for Forest Management (Forest Plantation) under the Malaysian Timber Certification Scheme (MTCS), marking another milestone in its continued efforts to increase the number of certified forest plantations in Malaysia. It is the tenth Forest Plantation Management Unit (FPMU) certified under the MTCS and the third in Sabah after Ulu Sg. Milian and Sapulut Forest Reserve (FPMU 11) and Sapulut Forest Reserve (FPMU 14).
The certificate was issued by PEFC notified certification body, Control Union (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. (Control Union) to the forest manager, Gerak Saga Sdn. Bhd. (Gerak Saga) on 1 June 2021 following successful certification audits of the FPMU conducted against the prescribed Malaysian Criteria and Indicators for Sustainable Forest Management (MC&I SFM) standard. The FPMU was the first to be certified by Control Union and the certificate is valid for five years from the date of issue.
Gerak Saga specialises in growing and utilising planted forests. The company is a public-private partnership between Merica Forests Pte. Ltd. and the Sabah state government which aims at developing a sustainable forestry business based on sound ecological, social and economic principles as well as producing quality timber for Sabah’s downstream industries.
FMU 2 Gerak Saga Sdn. Bhd. covers an area of 6,476 hectares of the Bengkoka Forest Reserve and Tambalugu Forest Reserve in the northern region of Sabah. The area has been allocated for industrial tree plantation development of species such as Eucalyptus pellita, Eucalyptus spp. (hybrid), Acacia crassicarpa and Acacia mangium.
