New Standard for Forest Plantation Management Certification Published

Following the review process of the MC&I(Forest Plantations) that had taken two years to complete, it is with pleasure that the Malaysian Timber Certification Council (MTCC) announces the publication of the MC&I Forest Plantation.v2 which will replace the MC&I(Forest Plantations) as the standard for forest plantation management certification. The revision of the standard was based on international requirements and the standard setting process for the development of certification standards under the Malaysian Timber Certification Scheme (MTCS).

The formulation of MC&I Forest Plantation.v2 was led by a 15-member multi-stakeholder Standards Review Committee (SRC) comprising representatives from the indigenous peoples, workers union, environmental and economic stakeholder groups, as well as relevant government agencies from Sabah, Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia. A total of four SRC meetings, three public comments and three regional stakeholder consultations one each in Kuching, Kota Kinabalu and Kuala Lumpur had been conducted.

The revised standard, MC&I Forest Plantation.v2, maintains the overall structure and content of the previous version. The standard contains 10 Principles, 55 Criteria and 108 Indicators, with the inclusion of three additional Indicators. The standard can be downloaded here.

MTCC is currently in the process of obtaining PEFC endorsement of this standard. It is anticipated that PEFC endorsement could be received prior to the application date of the standard i.e. 1 July 2015. The transition plan for the application of the new standard can be downloaded here.
