What is timber certification?

Timber certification is a process which results in a written statement (a certificate) attesting the origin of wood raw material, and its status following validation by an independent third party. It involves forest management and chain of custody certification and is an important market-linked tool to encourage sustainable forest management which takes into consideration the economic, environmental and social dimensions of the forests. The goal is to link trade in forest/timber products to the sustainable management of the forest resource, by providing buyers with the confidence that the timber products manufactured/exported are indeed sourced from sustainably managed forests.
